Application to the Master Program American Studies

Introduction
General admission requirements:
- Students with a University of Groningen Bachelor's Degree in American Studies have direct access to the Mastertrack American Studies
- Students with a Bachelor's Degree in American Studies from any other institution have direct access to the Mastertrack American Studies
- Students who have completed both a University of Groningen Bachelor's Degree in
- History
- Media Studies
- English Language and Culture
- Arts, Culture and Media
- International Relations and International Organisation
- Art History
- Middle Eastern Studies
- European Languages and Cultures
- Archaeology
- Greek and Latin Language and Culture
and an American Studies pre-Master minor have direct access to the Master's degree in American Studies. All other students who have completed both a Bachelor's degree at the University of Groningen and a Minor in American Studies, have to apply through the American Studies Admission Board. After you complete your application, the Admissions Board will assess whether your educational/academic background meets the specific programme requirements, and will consider the level and curriculum of your previous studies. The Admission Board will then determine whether
- direct admission is possible
- a student has to complete the pre-Master's/ Minor programme, or
- a student cannot be admitted
- All other students,
- those with degrees in closely related disciplines (e.g. English, History, Media Studies, International Relations, Liberal Arts) from different research universities,
- those with degrees in unrelated disciplines, and
- those with a Bachelor's degree from a University of Applied Science/HBO degrees,
have to apply through the American Studies Amission Board. After you complete your application, the Admissions Board will assess whether your educational/academic background meets the specific programme requirements, and will consider the level and curriculum of your previous studies. The Admission Board will then determine whether:
- direct admission is possible
- a student has to complete the pre-Master's/ Minor programme in order to be admissible to the MA
- a student cannot be admitted
- An English Language Proficiency test may be required for non-Dutch Bachelor's degree candidates and for Dutch HBO candidates, unless your BA was fully taught and examined in English.

Step-by-step guide to your admission and application procedure

Step 1 - Prior education

Once you obtain your Bachelor's Degree in American Studies, you have direct access to the Master in American Studies. There are no further English language proficiency requirements.
Registration:
You have to register in Studielink yourself!
We recommend that you complete your registration - including payment of tuition fees! - at least a month before the final deadlines:
- 31 August for the start in September
- 31 January for the start in February
